EAGLE SCOUT Community Project (The Pumpkin Run 5k & 1Mile Gourd Walk)

I am an Eagle Scout from Troop 344 of Pemberville, Ohio.

Above: The logo I designed for the 3rd and final race held in 2011.

I started as a Bobcat in Cub Scouts (the starting rank at the time) at the age of 7 and progressed all the way to Eagle Scout.

My Eagle Scout project was organizing and facilitating a series of races called, “The Pumpkin Run 5k & 1-Mile Gourd Walk.” The original race was held on October 25, 2009.

The goal of the event was to collect canned goods for the local food pantry. To enter the race, each participate was required to provide a bag with 5 non-perishable canned goods, along with an additional $15 to help cover race costs.

The project required me to implement skills I had developed over my years in scouting.

In order to complete the project I had to meet with a BSA board to present my project idea. Once signed off, I then took my idea to the Village Council of Pemberville, Ohio and got approval for the race day and for police assistance in blocking off the race route.

The next step was determining the race route, creating flyers/registration forms with liability waivers as approved by a local attorney.

Next I created race t-shirts based on the flyer design and began searching for race sponsors and added their logos to the back of the shirt.

After the flyers were out I got in touch with local media to help raise further awareness of the event. As registration forms came in, I kept track of the registrations and entry fees.

When the day of the race came, I had planned out timing for day-of registration, had volunteers prepared for various task such as taking the mentioned registrations, as well as keeping the time-splits for runners, hading out fruit and water at the race halfway point and handing out awards after the race.

The race resulted with neatly 800 canned goods and over $1,000 that were donated to the local food pantry after race expenses, I continued to organize the events for an additional 2 years up until I began college.

My board of review was held on February 17, 2010 I officially was promoted to the rank of Eagle Scout at age 16.
